London Sights, Sounds and Hotels
The second oldest surviving botanical garden in the land, Chelsea Physic Garden, was founded by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in 1673 when the doctor to George II, Sir Hans Sloane, called for the apothecaries of the empire to cultivate fifty plant species per year to present to the Royal Society for medicinal study. Many of the plants and trees, which were transported by barge, had never grown in England before, and today around 7000 plants still grow in the garden. A wide variety of species can be found from Pomegranates to the Willow Pattern Tree, Exotic Cork Oak, and even England's first rock garden. An industry in the new colony of Georgia was commenced from Cottonseed from Chelsea Physic Garden.
